Why LLMs suck at writing


A week ago I was scrolling through the AskReddit subreddit. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine.

This was the question I was reading:

I stumbled upon the following comment:

And this reply caught my eye:

I realised it must be written by an LLM.

It’s so boring! But I couldn’t put my finger on why. It was quite well written, funny, smart, relevant etc.

Then I realised something.

LLM replies are easy to spot because they are generic.

It’s because what makes you a good writer is having experiences and writing about them.

The interesting part about the writing is in the experience of the person writing it.

The prompt of the LLM can be crafted to perfection to change the style of writing (like the eigenrobot prompt). But it still wouldn’t make it interesting or novel.

It’s averaged out slop of all human experiences.

That, or I’m just not very good at detecting LLM writing at all 🤷‍♂️
